Authentic Thank‑Yous
“I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.” — Psalms 9:1 (NRSVUE)
Do you remember writing thank‑you cards? After birthdays and Christmas, we had the boys write notes for the thoughtfulness they’d been shown. When they were little, those cards were authentic and adorable — simple, block‑printed gratitude from a first‑grader’s heart.
But as the years went on, the thank‑yous became more of an obligation. Not because they weren’t grateful, but because life got busy and the thanks were squeezed in wherever they could fit.
So when I read today’s verse, two thoughts come to mind.
First, the authenticity of our thanks to God. Are my thank‑yous wholehearted, or are they rushed and tucked into the corners of my prayers?
Second, the sharing of our thanks. Children don’t just receive a gift — they announce it. “Look what Aunt Grace gave me!” They aren’t trying to make anyone jealous; they’re overflowing with joy. Their gratitude becomes a kind of witness: I am loved, and the giver is so good.
In the same way, God’s gifts to us — His grace, His mercy, His steadfast love — are expressions of His benevolence. We give thanks not out of obligation, but because His generosity stirs our hearts. And when we speak of His wonderful deeds, we aren’t boasting; we’re sharing the joy of being loved by a God who delights to give.
When we pause long enough to notice God’s gifts — the quiet mercies, the unexpected joys, the strength we didn’t know we had — gratitude rises almost on its own. And when we speak of His wonderful deeds, we’re simply telling the truth about a God whose love keeps finding us. May our thanks today be wholehearted, and may our words bear witness to the goodness of the Giver.
Lord, You are generous beyond measure. You give grace we could never earn and love we could never repay. Teach us to thank You with our whole hearts — not out of obligation, but out of joy for all You have done. Let our gratitude become a testimony, so others may see Your kindness through the stories we tell. Make us mindful, make us sincere, and make us bold to speak of Your wonderful deeds. Amen.
Grace & Peace, Pastor Tim
