Think of a time when you've given your word to do something. Whether it was as simple as baking cookies for a fundraiser or exchanging wedding vows, in this promise is your pledge -- your commitment. You are making an obligation to someone or something.
When we decide to become disciples of Christ, accepting God's grace, we are making a serious commitment. Part of receiving this grace is relinquishing control of our lives. Our human plans become secondary as we place our trust in God's will for our lives. Our direction becomes his direction as the Holy Spirit leads us. In death to our desires, we find life. Not only the promise of eternal life but in dying to sin, we become reborn in Christ.
Gracious God, thank you for the new life found in Jesus Christ. Please help us in the commitment we have made in accepting your grace. Help us relinquish control of our lives to you and willingly obey the guidance of the Holy Spirit. We ask this in the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
