Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Matthew 5:6 NIV
Meatloaf, french fries, and apple pie are a few of the things I sometimes have a craving for. Whenever I have one of those yearnings, it doesn't go away until it's satisfied. I'm sure we all have at times experienced similar longings.
We also have spiritual longings that must be satisfied. We need to feed our hunger for righteousness. As people filled with the Holy Spirit, our souls have a yearning to draw closer to God. When we study and meditate upon His word and pray to Him, we satisfy that urge. Another way to feed that craving is through service, putting our faith in action. Whether that is in personal witness, working at a food bank, or anything we do to God's glory.
Jesus promised that those who hunger and thirst would be filled. That means action needs to be taken on our part. It would be like craving meatloaf but not doing anything about it; to fill that craving, I either need to bake a meatloaf or go to a restaurant that serves meatloaf. Unless we actively pursue righteousness, that yearning will go unsatisfied.
Father God, we thank you for your Son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. In Jesus, we have the example of what it means to be righteous. Through the Holy Spirit, we feel the longing for righteousness. Bless us today and fill our hunger. Please help us understand your word, feel your presence, and be your humble servants in the world. We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
