Jesus replied, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty." John 6:35 NLT
Yesterday, I mentioned Christ makes seven "I am" statements in John. Today is the first of those. Jesus compares himself to basic human needs–we all need to eat and drink. It's a matter of survival.
Spirituality, we need to eat and drink as well. It is essential! We do that when we come together for the Lord's Supper. In this symbolic act, we partake in what Jesus offered. We experience a foretaste of Christ’s future heavenly banquet.
In our Sunday morning worship, we pray, sing, share, and listen to the word read and expounded. In this, we experience the nourishment of our souls. When we depart, it is with a fullness that gives us strength to face the coming days.
Individually, we feed our spirit as we read and contemplate the sacred text. In our prayers, we drink from the heavenly well that never runs dry.
In saying we will never hunger and thirst again, Christ doesn't mean that it's a one-and-done activity, but that he is the source. We don't need to look any further. Jesus offers us what is essential. He provides food and drink for our hungry souls. Come, eat, and drink at his table and be filled.
Jesus, thank you for giving that which is essential for our souls' well-being. Fill us now and strengthen us for the day ahead. Sated by your Holy Spirit, may we go into the world to demonstrate and proclaim your glory. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
