Father and Defender
A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling. Psalms 68:5 NIV
The care of widows and orphans is frequently mentioned in the Bible, beginning with the Torah. These two groups were the most vulnerable, with no one to protect and provide for them. They are representative of all those "others," those who are harmed and marginalized by society.
Jesus ushered in an upside-down kingdom, not of power and prestige but tenderness and kindness. He demonstrated God's love for all those hurting and in need in his compassion and grace. We are reminded of his mighty acts of healing, passion for the downtrodden and outcasts, and consideration for those who need hope most. As his disciples, we continue in his example, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, freeing the oppressed, and sharing the message there is a heavenly Father who cherishes us.
Heavenly Father of love, we thank you for your compassion and mercy. Through your son Jesus, we have the perfect example of what is essential in your kingdom. You love us for not what we have or do not have but for who we are, your children. Therefore, help us live into your kingdom, caring for each other as equal sisters and brothers, as siblings of Christ. We pray this in the name of Jesus Christ in union with the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
