Ho, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you that have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen carefully to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food.
Isaiah 55:1-2
Here’s my translation of this verse.
Hey there! Are you thirsty and hungry but have no money? Come and eat; it’s good home cooking. Why do you spend your hard-earned cash on things without nutritional value? What a waste. You can come and enjoy this food, and it gives you everything you really need. Enjoy it and be happy, it's stick to your ribs Mama cooking, and it's totally free, no strings attached.
We, humans, are often guilty of chasing after the wrong things. We wrongly think that new promotion, new car, new house, that new (fill in the blank), will bring happiness and it just doesn't. Those are merely material things, granted we may need them, but they'll never satisfy. Usually, the minute we receive them, we immediately start looking at the next upgrade. But we don’t have to live like that; we are offered something lasting, something substantial, that we often overlooked. That emptiness that we are looking to fill can only be satisfied from one source -- Jesus Christ. That food we've needed so desperately is free to us; it’s been paid for by Jesus' sacrifice. All we need to do is accept. Isn't that beautiful?
Most gracious and loving God, we give you thanks for the eternal food offered to us. We confess we spend too much time on material things that matter little and not enough time on things that do. We become too easily satisfied with empty calories instead of the free soul food you offer. Father forgive us and help us to make better choices. We ask that you fill us with your food, refresh us with your water. In the name of your Son Jesus, we pray. Amen.
