Newborn Babes

Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good. 1 Peter 2:2‭-‬3 NIV

Most babies like to eat! Their tiny tummies only allow them to eat very small amounts, but they may eat every couple hours. Craving to satisfy this need, they make it known when they want to eat by crying and sticking their little hands in their mouths.

We who have tasted God's goodness also are left with that craving for more. In participating in corporate worship and sharing in communion, we become fed. But we can't eat only once a week; we need to satisfy our hunger in daily spiritual practices, reading and study, and prayer time. Like the infant, it may be best to do this a few ounces at a time, feeding several times a day.

To thrive, we must eat! Like babies instinctively know they need to feed to flourish, so must we. While retaining the hunger of infancy, we want to become mature disciples of Jesus Christ. By growing into his love and righteousness and awakening that hunger in others.

God, we have tasted what you offer and know it is good. In your Son Jesus Christ, you show us deliverance from sin. Through the Holy Spirit, you create a craving within us to become more like Christ. Open our minds to the wisdom of your words, our ears to your voice, and our hearts to obedience. Please help us grow in discipleship and make us grown-up followers you want us to be. In the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.

Shalom,

Pastor Tim
