Sleepless

Writer: timothyrsoutherntimothyrsouthern

"I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint.” Jeremiah 31:25 NIV

The chances are that sometime during your life, you have suffered times of sleeplessness. It may have been nights with a teething baby or chronic insomnia. Often worry, the restlessness of our souls, may keep us awake. Even when we manage to go to sleep, it's fitfully, our dreams are about the problem, and we awake to the same issue. Whatever the reason, the result is extreme tiredness and fatigue that affect our ability to do everyday activities in the same way.

The human Jesus experienced weariness; remember the stories of his praying while the disciples slept? In those times, his soul was troubled, and he prayed for courage, strength, and direction. And, he knew exhaustion, evidenced by his sleeping in the boat during the violent storm–only to be awakened by his frightened friends.

our hope lies in this invitation from Jesus, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." (Matt. 11:28) Whatever that thing is that keeps us awake, crying baby, medical condition, or those things weighing heavy on our souls, bring them to God. He loves us! The whole us, soul and body, spiritual and physical–as if they can be separated). God cares for our well-being and desires to relieve our weariness and refresh us.

Father God, you create us and care for your children. You invite us to bring our weariness to you, and you will give us rest. Thank you for this love and compassion. Refresh us today, Lord, renew our body and soul. Give us the courage, strength, and direction for what you would have us do today. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Shalom,

Pastor Tim
