"Even now," declares the Lord, "return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning." Joel 2:12 NIV
The Human Genome Project was a 13-year-long program to sequence the DNA, the markers that pass genetic information from generation to generation. For example, by sending saliva samples to a lab, you can discover your countries of origin and predisposition for certain diseases. Anyone who's watched a crime drama on TV also knows it is used forensically to solve crimes.
We have a spiritual DNA as well. Within us is a predisposition that desires to know something greater than us. So while our baser instinct is towards sin–sadly, that's in our DNA too–there is a yearning inside continually calling us to God. We are like metal shavings drawn to a powerful magnet.
Meanwhile, temptations and carnal desires constantly try to isolate our souls from God's drawing. Satan desires to mutate our DNA. In popular culture, this struggle is often portrayed by an angel perched on one shoulder and the devil on the other. Although the image is meant to be comical, the battle within us certainly is not.
The good news is that we do not have to remain in a desperate state of searching; we can fill that yearning. Whatever our situation, whatever we have done, God, in his grace, continues to call us to him. Through faith in Jesus Christ
Loving God, thank you for your prevenient grace and the continual calling of us to you. Though we lose our way, you still yearn for us to return to you. We come today in response to your mercy and love with humbled and repentant hearts. Cleanse us of our sins and redeem us through Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
