A Mother’s Love

“And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21 (NLT)

When we think of Mary, the mother of Jesus, our minds often go to Christmas—the manger, the star, the shepherds. But Mary’s journey as a mother didn’t end in Bethlehem; it was a journey of love, sacrifice, and unwavering devotion. Today, as we celebrate mothers, we reflect on one of the greatest examples of a mother's love—Mary and her steadfast support for Jesus from cradle to cross.

From the moment the angel Gabriel appeared to her, Mary embraced the calling of motherhood with faith and courage (Luke 1:38). She treasured the moments of Jesus’ childhood, pondering them in her heart (Luke 2:19). She stood by him at the wedding in Cana, encouraging others to trust in him (John 2:5). And even in his suffering, she remained near the cross, witnessing his sacrifice (John 19:25).

Just as Mary’s love endured through joy and sorrow, so too do mothers today walk alongside their children through life’s challenges and triumphs. Like Mary, some know the deep sorrow of losing a child, carrying that grief in their hearts while cherishing the love they once shared. Others step into the role of motherhood in different ways—through adoption or fostering, as grandmothers, aunts, teachers, or caregivers—offering love and guidance in ways just as profound.

There are also those whose hearts long for motherhood but have faced challenges—those navigating infertility, loss, or waiting with hope for the day they may embrace a child of their own. Today, we recognize their journey and hold them in prayer, asking God to grant them comfort and peace.

And for those whose relationships with their mothers have been strained or painful, may they find reassurance in the truth that God's love is constant. Even when human relationships falter, Christ’s love remains steadfast, offering healing, hope, and the embrace of our perfect Parent.

On this Mother’s Day, let us pause to thank the mothers who raised us, those who willingly and wholeheartedly embraced the role, and those who loved us when loving wasn’t easy. And for those who now live only in our memories, may their love continue to guide us.

But today, let’s not just reflect on a mother’s love—let’s express it. Whether through a phone call, a hug, or a prayer of remembrance, may we honor the mothers in our lives with the same love and devotion they have shown us.

Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of mothers—their love, their sacrifices, and their unwavering presence. May those who grieve find comfort in cherished memories. May those who celebrate embrace each moment with joy. And may we never take for granted the blessing of a mother’s love. Bless them, strengthen them, and fill their hearts with peace. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
