Bone-Tired
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28 (NIV)
Have you ever felt the kind of weariness that settles not just in your body, but in your spirit? My grandparents used to talk about being bone‑tired — the kind of exhaustion that makes even small things feel heavy. Jesus knows that kind of tiredness, and he meets it with an invitation, not a demand, not a lecture, but a promise of rest.
In those times, the familiar words of Psalm 23 speak to us with renewed tenderness: “He makes me lie down in green pastures… He restores my soul.” God’s rest is not simply the absence of activity; it is the presence of grace. When we pause, even for a moment, we make space for God to restore what life has drained. Rest becomes a way of remembering that we are held, that we are not alone, and that the strength we need does not come from pushing harder but from returning to the One who renews us.
There are seasons when we feel too tired even to pray. Yet those are often the moments when prayer matters most — not because we must find the right words, but because God meets us in our weakness. Isaiah reminds us that “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.” When we turn toward God, even with a sigh or an honest, earnest whispered “help,” we discover that divine rest is not a reward for the strong but a gift for the worn‑out.
Sometimes the rest God gives is quiet peace. Sometimes it is clarity. Sometimes it is the gentle nudge to slow down, to release what we cannot carry, or to make changes that bring life back into balance. Always, it is rooted in love — the love of a Savior who knows our limits and invites us to lay our burdens down.
Lord, we come to you weary in body, mind, and spirit. You know the weight we carry and the tiredness we hide. Give us the rest we cannot find on our own. Quiet our anxious thoughts, steady our hearts, and restore our strength. Teach us to slow down, to listen, and to trust that your grace is enough for today. Lead us toward the rest that renews us for goodness. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Grace & Peace,
Pastor Tim
