Called for His Purpose

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." – Romans 8:28 (NIV)

Life often feels unpredictable, full of twists and turns we never expected. You lose a job you thought was secure. A relationship you invested in falls apart. A door you were sure God was opening suddenly closes. In those moments, it’s easy to wonder if there’s any purpose in the chaos. Yet, Romans 8:28 reminds us that God is weaving all things together for good, not just for anyone, but for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. This verse invites us to trust that our lives are not random, but part of a divine design.

The phrase “called according to His purpose” speaks to God’s intentionality. From the beginning, His desire has been for humanity to love Him and live in relationship with Him. Genesis 1:26-27 reminds us that we were created in His image, reflecting His nature and designed for a life of purpose. Even when humanity strayed, God’s plan remained steadfast. Jeremiah 29:11 reassures us that His intentions are for good—to give us hope and a future. Some Christian traditions emphasize predestination as God’s sovereign choice, while others highlight human responsibility in responding to His call.

One perspective, particularly in Wesleyan theology, is the idea of prevenient grace—the belief that God’s grace is at work in every person’s life before they even recognize it. This grace is seen as an invitation, gently drawing people toward Him, preparing their hearts to respond to His call. It affirms that God is actively working, even in moments when we feel distant or unaware of His presence.

But at the heart of both views is this truth: God’s purpose is to shape us into the image of Christ (Romans 8:29). This means that, regardless of our current situation, whether we are facing challenges or celebrating victories, God is working through our circumstances to draw us closer to Him. His calling is not just about salvation; it’s about transformation. We are invited into a journey where our lives reflect His love, grace, and truth.

Today, consider how God might be calling you. Are there areas in your life where He is shaping you to trust Him more? Are there moments where His purpose feels unclear? Take heart—God is working, even when we don’t see the full picture.

If you feel uncertain, remember that His calling is not about perfection but about relationship. He invites you to walk with Him, to trust His plan, and to embrace the purpose He has for you.

Father, thank You for calling us according to Your purpose. In moments of doubt, remind us that You are working all things for good. Help us to trust Your design, even when we don’t understand the path ahead. Shape us into the image of Christ and guide us to live in a way that reflects Your love and grace. May we walk confidently in Your calling, knowing that You are always with us. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
