Certain Deliverance

“Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.” Psalm 34:19 (ESV)

Psalm 34 was born out of one of the most uncertain and overwhelming times in David’s life. Fleeing from King Saul’s wrath, David found himself in enemy territory, in the presence of Achish, king of Gath. In desperation, he pretended to be insane to escape unharmed (1 Samuel 21:10-15). It was after this harrowing experience that David wrote Psalm 34—a song of praise to the Lord who rescued him.

Despite the dangers he faced, David’s words are not filled with fear but with confidence in God’s deliverance. He acknowledges that the righteous will endure many troubles, but he clings to the certainty that the Lord will rescue them. His life was proof that affliction was not an absence of God’s favor, but rather an opportunity for God’s power to be displayed.

This assurance speaks powerfully to us today, those who are made righteous through Jesus Christ. Affliction is not accidental—it is a reality for all those who follow Christ. Paul echoes this truth in 2 Timothy 3:11-12, reminding Timothy of the hardships he endured:

“My persecutions and sufferings that happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra—which persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me. Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.” (ESV)

Paul's testimony mirrors David’s—trouble is inevitable, but deliverance is guaranteed. Just as the Lord rescued David, He also delivered Paul again and again. The same God who preserved them also preserves us.

Psalm 34:19 and 2 Timothy 3:11-12 do not promise a life free from suffering, but they do promise divine rescue. Yet, this rescue does not always come immediately. Often, God’s timing looks different from our own expectations, leading us to question whether He is truly working. But delays do not mean denial—they often mean development. God's rescue isn't just about removing hardship; it's about shaping our hearts, increasing our trust, and deepening our dependence on Him. Just as a seed must first endure the darkness of the soil before sprouting into growth, so must we often endure seasons of waiting before seeing His deliverance fully unfold.

As believers, though we experience hardship, persecution, loss, and uncertainty, we are reminded that trouble is never the end of the story. God’s deliverance may not always come the way we expect, but it always comes. Sometimes He removes the trial entirely; other times, He carries us through it, strengthening us along the way.

If you find yourself weary today, unsure of when relief will come, take heart—God sees you, God hears you, and God will deliver you. Just as he was faithful to David and Paul, he is loyal to you. You may feel like you are waiting longer than you expected, but rest assured—God’s timing is never wrong. His rescue will come at the perfect moment, accomplishing far more than just relief—it will bring transformation. Find peace and rest in the promise that your deliverance is certain.

Lord, thank you for your faithfulness. When troubles press in, help me to remember that you are my deliverer. Give me strength in seasons of affliction and confidence in your rescue. I trust you to bring me through, knowing that your ways are perfect and your timing is always best. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
