“I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord.” – Psalm 122:1 (KJV)

There is a particular kind of joy that rises in us when we step into God’s presence — not the joy of entertainment or distraction, but the deep, steady joy of being welcomed as we are. When I read this psalm, I hear the voice of someone who knows what it means to belong. Someone who has been invited, embraced, and drawn into a community where God meets us with grace.

It reminds me of that longing expressed in the song Church (Take Me Back) by Cochren & Co. — that desire to return to the place where faith feels alive again, where God’s love feels close, where we remember who we are and whose we are. Not quoting the song directly, but the heart of it echoes the psalmist’s joy: “Take me back to where it started… take me back to community with God and others.”

Because there is something about being in relationship. Something about sharing life — our praises and our prayers. Something about praying together. Something about worshipping side by side. Something about coming to Christ's table and receiving the bread and cup as one body.

It’s an experience like nothing else — not because the building is special — it may be a cathedral or a storefront, but because God meets us in the gathering. God meets us in the faces around us. God meets us in the stories we carry, the burdens we share, and the hope we cling to.

The psalmist wasn’t just glad to go to a place. He was glad to go with people — the community of God’s beloved — as they ascended Zion into the presence of the One who receives us with joy.

And this verse speaks not only to those who’ve been away, feeling that tug to return…

It speaks to the faithful ones who come week after week. Those who vacuum the floors, open the doors, set the table, sing the hymns, pray the prayers, and keep the light of Christ burning. Your presence matters. Your faithfulness shapes the community others long to return to. You are part of the welcome God extends.

So, whether you’ve been coming every Sunday for decades, or you’re feeling that quiet whisper of “take me back” — hear the psalmist’s gladness as your own. There is room for you. There is joy waiting for you. There is a community ready to walk with you into God’s presence.

Holy God, thank You for the gift of fellowship — for the people who welcome us, pray with us, worship beside us, and remind us that we belong. Draw us again into Your presence with gladness. Renew our joy, restore our hope, and gather us as one people in Your love. Amen.

Grace & Peace,

Pastor Tim
