"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." Hebrews 13:8 NIV
I think it is fair to say, we all like routine and stability. We pretty much want things to remain the way they've been. We become comfortable in our ordinary lives. We also know as much as we crave things to stay unchanged, things happen in life, good and bad, that upset our normal. When this happens, we often feel uneasy until we absorb this necessary adjustment.
As today's scripture indicates, there is an exception. Jesus is the same always; there are no inconsistencies and no surprises. So when we feel threatened and ill-equipped to handle the changes in our lives, we can rely on Jesus, our rock. We know this with certainty because we have been beneficiaries of his consistency in the past.
Father, we give you thanks for your consistent love, forgiveness, and compassion. We are grateful for Jesus, our rock, to which we can turn when our worlds become topsy-turvy. Please help us remember your sameness as the unexpected happens in our lives today. We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
