Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain. - Psalms 127:1 NIV
When you are building a house, you want to hire people who know what they're doing. Unless you have floor plans, you need to hire an architect to draw up blueprints. Then, there will be a general contractor to oversee the project start-to-finish. They will bring skilled tradespeople, excavators, foundation experts, framers, plumbers, electricians, roofers, and finish carpenters at the correct times. Each person with special training and knowledge of their fields. It's not a job most of us are qualified to tackle by ourselves. If we tried, the result would probably be an eyesore and unsafe.
The same is true of our spiritual house. We lack the wisdom and knowledge to erect a structure that will stand against the storms that are sure to come. We need God, who is the architect of creation; his Word is our blueprint. Jesus Christ is our general contractor. There is nothing that arises during our spiritual construction that he can't handle. The Holy Spirit helps us manage the stresses that occur during the project. Finally, it is through prayer we keep in contact with our general contractor. Unless God builds our spiritual house, we don't stand a chance.
God, architect of our lives, we come before you today with praise and thanksgiving. We confess there are times we try to construct our lives, and we make a mess of it. We build things that do not last. Forgive us, and help us to remember we need you to build our houses. Let our labors not be in vain, but lead us and guide us to do your will, so we erect houses that stand for eternity. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
