Continuing Care

Writer: timothyrsoutherntimothyrsouthern

“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul.” Psalms 23:1-3 (NIV)

Several years ago, we had an elderly aunt and uncle sell their home and move into a continuing care facility. The idea of this type of facility is you move into independent living. This is just what it sounds like: you have the freedom to come and go as if you were living in an apartment. As more care is needed, they offer assistance with everyday things like shopping and appointment rides. They also provide skilled nursing assistance when you can no longer live independently. All of this happens under one roof.

God, as our Shepherd, is the ultimate provider and caretaker. He leads us to green pastures and still waters but doesn't just leave us there. His compassion and providence are continuous and unwavering. As a continuing care facility adapts to the changing needs of its residents, God's ever-watchful care for us evolves with our circumstances.

He guides us through every stage of life, offering spiritual nourishment and peace. When we are strong, He leads us in paths of righteousness. When we are weak or in need, He restores our souls and provides the support we need.

The continuing care facility serves as a metaphor for how God provides for us. Residents enter independent living with freedom, and as their needs change, they receive assistance and skilled care, all under one roof. Similarly, God's provision covers every aspect of our lives. He is with us in our moments of independence and times of need, always offering His guidance and support. Jesus reminds us of his provision in Matthew 6:31-33:

“Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

May we remember that God’s compassion and providence are always with us. We are never alone or abandoned. God is our Shepherd, continuously providing for our needs, leading, restoring, and guiding us in righteousness. As we listen to the words of Jesus in John 10:14-15, may we recognize God as our continuing care provider:

“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me—just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep.”

By recognizing Jesus as our Good Shepherd, we understand the depth of His love and commitment to us. He knows us intimately and is always ready to lay down His life for us, ensuring our well-being and care.

Father Shepherd, we thank You for guiding us with Your unwavering care. Help us to trust in Your provision and seek Your kingdom first, as we recognize Jesus as our Good Shepherd, who loves us deeply and leads us always. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
