Divine Order

His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 2 Peter 1:3 NIV

We are predominantly a people who crave order and predictability. We like a set schedule: rising at the same time, beginning our daily routines, and going to bed at the same time. Order helps to bring clarity. We operate more efficiently by organizing tasks, prioritizing responsibilities, and creating schedules. When there are disruptions to the order, we frequently become unsettled, throwing us off for the rest of that day—or days if it’s something more significant as we adjust to a new routine.

In today’s passage, the apostle Peter illustrates how God’s power and promises bring divine order to our lives. When the routine becomes unpredictable, He is here to help us adjust to the new normal. Here is how God brings order:

Divine Power: Peter emphasizes that God’s divine power is at work in the lives of believers. This power is not merely theoretical; it is practical and transformative.

Everything Needed for Life and Godliness: We receive everything necessary for living a godly life through our knowledge of God. He equips us with the tools and resources to navigate life and grow holily.

Precious Promises: God has given us “very great and precious promises.” These promises are not empty words; they are guarantees of His faithfulness. Through these promises, we can participate in the divine nature.

Escape from Corruption: By embracing God’s promises, we escape the corruption caused by evil desires in the fallen world. God’s grace enables us to overcome sin and live differently.

Spiritual Growth: Peter encourages believers to pursue spiritual growth actively. He lists a progression of virtues: faith, goodness, knowledge, self-control, endurance, godliness, mutual affection, and love. These virtues build upon each other, leading to effective and fruitful lives.

Partakers of the Divine Nature: As we grow in these virtues, we become “partakers of the divine nature.” This phrase suggests that we share God’s character and reflect His holiness. It’s a remarkable transformation from chaos to order.

By embracing God’s truth and growing in godliness, we move away from chaos and corruption and become more like Him.

Heavenly Father,

We come before You with hearts open to Your divine power and order. As we meditate on the promises in Your Word, we recognize that You have granted us everything needed for life and godliness.

We thank You for these precious promises that anchor our faith.

Help us discern Your will amidst life’s complexities.

Bring clarity to our decisions, relationships, and purpose.

May our faith continue to grow, deeply rooted in Your truth.

Strengthen our convictions so we remain unwavering even in turbulent times.

Cultivate goodness within us, teaching us to extend kindness, compassion, and love to others.

Feed us with wisdom that aligns with Your heart.

Empower us to exercise self-control and help us resist temptations and destructive desires.

When trials come, grant us endurance. Remind us that perseverance leads to maturity. May our character mirror Yours, and our actions testify to Your transforming work.

In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
