Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Romans 12:21 NRSV
During the season of Lent, we often think of prayer and fasting. But we may overlook almsgiving as a spiritual discipline. Helping those in need, and showing acts of kindness, are pleasing to God.
In today's verse, the Apostle Paul makes it simple. We have two choices; we can do good or evil. You might argue there is a third option–do nothing, but that is equivalent to doing evil. In doing nothing, we are overcome by evil. Good requires action!
In verse 20, Paul writes, "No, 'if your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink; for by doing this you will heap burning coals on their heads.'" (Reference to Proverbs 25:21-22.) While heaping burning coals on someone's head is undoubtedly an evil act, what might happen when we shower them with goodness? Might our actions of Christ's love lead them to repentance?
God, thank you for all your goodness. Help us not to stand idly by accepting evil but take action for good. When others treat us hatefully, give us hearts of kindness and charity. Let all of our deeds be pleasing to you and for your glory. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
