Dwelling in God’s Certainty

“Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” — Psalm 23:6 (NIV)
“Surely.” It’s a small word, but it carries the weight of confidence. In a world where so much shifts beneath our feet, certainty can feel rare. Yet David begins this beloved verse with assurance — not in himself, not in circumstances, but in the unchanging character of God.
God’s goodness and love do not wait for us to earn them. They accompany us from our first breath to our last. Even before we enter the world, God surrounds us with grace, and long after we have left it, that grace continues to hold us.
Jesus reminds us that God’s blessings fall on all people — “the evil and the good… the just and the unjust.” But we do have a choice: Where will we dwell — today, in the ordinary moments, and forever, in the life God prepares for us?
In response to this certainty, David makes his own declaration: “I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” Trust in God’s goodness naturally leads him to choose God’s presence — now and for eternity.
Like David, we can choose to live in the Lord’s house — to acknowledge Jesus as Savior, to awaken to the blessings we receive daily, and to trust the promise that God “will never leave you nor forsake you.”
In our moments of trouble, in our times of doubt and despair, this promise becomes more than words. God holds us when we are weak and raises us when we are discouraged. True confidence grows not from our own steadiness, but from God’s.
David’s assurance stretches beyond this life. He is certain he will dwell with God forever. Through Christ, that same promise is ours. God’s goodness and love do not end at the grave; they carry us into the fullness of eternal life. This is why Christian funerals hold both sorrow and joy — grief for those who remain and rejoicing for the one who has gone home.
God of steadfast love, thank you for the certainty of your goodness that follows us through every season of life. Root us deeply in your presence so that we may dwell with you now and forever. Shape our hearts to reflect Christ and give us courage to share your promise with those who long for hope. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Grace & Peace,
Pastor Tim
