Endurance and the Prize

“Blessed [happy, spiritually prosperous, favored by God] is the man who is steadfast under trial and perseveres when tempted; for when he has passed the test and been approved, he will receive the [victor’s] crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.” — James 1:12 (AMP)

I have a friend who runs marathons. She has run so many that I’ve lost count. But years ago she told me about running an ultramarathon — fifty miles. It wasn’t just the extra distance. The terrain was tougher, the footing unpredictable, and instead of city streets, she navigated trails that demanded constant attention. And because many of these events run through the night, the mental endurance required is every bit as challenging as the physical effort. As in the marathon, there were 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners by age class, but countless others showed the same endurance, faced the same challenges, and crossed the finish line long after the podium had been decided.

In the life of faith, James reminds us that God is not looking for the fastest finishers or the ones who seem strongest. He is looking for those who keep going when the path is uneven, when the night feels long, and when the challenges require more than we think we have. Perseverance in trials is not about winning a race; it’s about remaining faithful when circumstances test our resolve. James tells us that those who endure—those who hold steady under pressure—are blessed because their endurance becomes the place where God meets them, strengthens them, and ultimately crowns them with life.

The promise God gives through James is simple and profound: He sees every step we take in faith. Every quiet act of perseverance, every moment we choose to trust Him instead of giving up, every trial we walk through with our eyes fixed on Him — none of it is wasted. The crown of life isn’t for a select few who finish first. It’s for all who keep going, all who hold on, all who love Him enough to stay the course.

Lord, thank You for the strength You give in every trial. Help us to remain steadfast when the path is difficult and the night feels long. Teach us to trust You with each step, and to keep moving forward in faith. Crown our endurance with Your life, Your presence, and Your peace. Amen.

Grace & Peace, Pastor TIm
