Every Time I Remember

“I thank my God every time I remember you.” — Philippians 1:3 (NIV)

While waiting outside a restaurant recently, I overheard two teenage girls walking by. One said, “The arcade makes me so nostalgic.” I smiled to myself—nostalgia at seventeen? But it reminded me: we’re never too young or too old to remember with fondness. Whether it’s a place, a moment, or a person, memory has a way of stirring gratitude.

Nostalgia can be lighthearted—a flash of joy from a childhood arcade—but it can also be profound. For Paul, remembering the Philippians wasn’t just sentimental; it was a lifeline of love and spiritual solidarity, even as he sat imprisoned in Rome.

In verses 4–8, he speaks of praying with joy because of their partnership in the gospel. He’s confident that the good work begun in them will be carried to completion. He longs for them with “the affection of Christ Jesus,” not just as co-laborers but as beloved companions in faith.

And then, in verses 9–11, Paul offers a prayer: that their love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight. That they may discern what is best, remain pure and blameless, and be filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ.

Paul’s memory leads to thanksgiving. His thanksgiving leads to prayer. And his prayer is rooted in love and hope for their continued growth.

Today, let’s remember with fondness those who’ve walked with us—mentors, friends, congregations, even fleeting encounters that left a mark. Let’s thank God for them. And yes, even for the nostalgia of arcades and the joy of unexpected memories. Like Paul, may our remembrance lead to thanksgiving. And may our thanksgiving lead to prayer—for our partnerships in the gospel, and for the ministries of all who serve Christ with sincerity and joy.

Gracious God, thank you for the gift of memory and for those whose lives have shaped ours. We remember with gratitude the people and places that have nurtured our faith. Strengthen our partnerships in the gospel. Bless the ministries of all who serve you with love and integrity. May our prayers be filled with joy, and our lives bear the fruit of righteousness. Amen.

Peace & Grace,

Pastor Tim
