"But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one." 2 Thessalonians 3:3 ESV
In reading the verse this morning, I immediately thought of the powerful hymn, "Great Is Thy Faithfulness." Although written in 1923, the message is timeless. Here's the chorus:
Great is thy faithfulness!
Great is thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed thy hand hath provided;
Great is thy faithfulness, Lord into me!
The writer, Thomas Chisholm, looking back on the writing of the hymn, recalled, "My income has not been large at any time due to impaired health in the earlier years which has followed me on until now. Although I must not fail to record here the unfailing faithfulness of a covenant keeping God and that He has given me many wonderful displays of His providing care, for which I am filled with astonishing gratefulness."
We can each recall in our own lives God's acts of faithfulness to us. Think back to a time when you were in need. Can you remember how God answered your prayer? Perhaps in an entirely unexpected way.
God, we come to you today in gratitude for your faithfulness to us. We remember the times you answered our prayers when we most needed and also for all the blessings you bestow on us every day without our asking. You keep your hands of protection around us and guard us against evil. We give you all the honor, praise, and thanks for your unfailing love and faithfulness. Amen
If you would like to listen to "Great Is Thy Faithfulness", there is a beautiful recording by contemporary gospel artist, Chris Rice.
