He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name's sake. Psalms 23:3 NKJV
Every so often, I like to watch Home and Garden Television (HGTV), especially a show called Fixer Upper. Husband and wife team Chip and Joanna Gaines work in rehabbing homes in Waco, Texas. Like most HGTV shows, they show the projects from start to finish. However, the houses on this show seem to be in a sadder state of disrepair. Yet the Gaines' see a potential in the homes most of us would miss. They turn the rundown home with a sagging porch, peeling paint, and leaky roof into a showplace. The transition is remarkable.
Sometimes we may feel like those sad homes. We look around at work needed and simply can't find the energy or skills to start those repair projects. We become so fixated on how things are that we can't see how they can be. We know we need restoration, yet we are incapable of doing it ourselves.
That restoration we are so in need of, that refreshing of our spiritual homes,
God stands ready to help. He knows our potential and sees the end result. (Perhaps it's not coincidental his earthly profession was as a carpenter.) God does this for no other reason than to show his craftsmanship, and when he is finished, others are amazed at the results. They want to have him work on their homes too.
God of restoration, we come to you as fixer-uppers. We confess we need your help. Our souls need to be refreshed. So come into our hearts and begin your work, making us into the homes you've envisioned for us. Make us showplaces of your glory. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
