Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done. Proverbs 19:17 NIV
Have you heard the expression that someone would "give the shirt off their back?" It means to act with selflessness and generosity. We frequently witness these acts of kindness among our guests at L Street Mission. Those with very little willingly share their blankets, clothing, food, and shelter. These acts of compassion and kindness contrast starkly in the face of others who have much yet care and give little.
Jesus often spoke about the poor. On the Sermon on the Mount, he blessed them and promised theirs would be the kingdom of God (Luke 6:20-21). In Mark 12:41-44, he observes the sacrificial act of the poor widow, giving the great offering of two small copper coins. Christ also gave instructions on caring for the hungry, thirsty, and naked in Matthew 25:34-36. Finally, in Luke 14:12-14, he tells us when we have a party, invite not our friends but "the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."
In giving to those less fortunate, we are responding to God's grace. What we are returning is not our resources but that which God has given. So also, we are blessed twice in our giving, first in the bounty received in this life, and second in our reward in heaven.
Generous God, we give thanks for all you've given us. We confess at times, we think in terms of scarcity and don't act from stingy hearts. Then we remember your promise and recall even in the financially tight times, you've always provided. Open our eyes to the plight of those in need and our hearts in giving. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
