His divine power has given us everything needed for life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 2 Peter 1:3 NRSV
Have you ever started a do-it-yourself project quickly to discover you need a required tool? This happened to me recently when I wanted to remove the window air conditioner in the church office. I needed a medium-sized Phillips head screwdriver for the job, but I couldn't find one anywhere. I searched the two toolboxes (one was filled with crafts), the drawers, and the cabinets, but there wasn't a screwdriver to be found. (Note to self: bring my toolbox to church.)
Today's scripture assures us that Christ provides us with all the spiritual equipment we need for "life and godliness." In the Bible, we have the biggest and best toolbox ever. Screwdrivers, hammers, pliers–whatever we need is there. We don't need to worry about missing a tool; it is all right there.
Sometimes, though, we may need help locating the right tool. We know it's there somewhere, possibly resting at the bottom. (My toolbox is a mess. Often, to find what I'm looking for means taking everything out.) But Christ has equipped us with the Holy Spirit, which helps us find the proper tool and, when we lack knowledge, shows us how to use it. Instead of going to YouTube, we go to God in prayer.
God, thank you for equipping us with what we need to live godly lives. Please help us in using these tools to glorify you. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
