Good and Perfect Gifts

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

James 1:17 NIV

Have you ever received something that was a gift but has strings attached? For example, a "free weekend" at a resort which includes listening to a timeshare spiel. Or perhaps a gift that was given more out of obligation than given freely? You may also have received a bad gift, not that it was something you didn't want but something harmful. These are not good and perfect gifts.

When we think of spiritual gifts, God's gifts are always good and perfect and given in love. We never receive a wrong, destructive, or harmful gift from Him; if it's any of those things, it's not from God. His gifts are always exactly what we need when we need them. They are not tied to human calendar events like birthdays and anniversaries, not as rewards, but just because of our need. God doesn't change his mind, freely passing out gifts then withholding them when we misbehave. Instead, when we repent, He responds with the gift of forgiveness. We do nothing to deserve these gifts; we don't earn them. They are given simply from His grace.

God, of all good and perfect gifts, we thank you for your love. As we move into this Advent Season, we remember your greatest good and perfect gift of Jesus Christ, our Redeemer, and Savior. We give you thanks for the gift of the Holy Spirit that speaks to us, leading and guiding us in righteousness. Please help us to be your light in the world, telling others of your gifts. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
