“Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates.” Proverbs 31:31 ESV
It is interesting that the final chapter in Proverbs is attributed to a king that is not even listed among the kings of Judah and Israel. One theory is that King Lemuel was a ruler of a surrounding nation and this saying, along with the borrowed wisdom from other cultures, was included in the compilation of wisdom in Proverbs. The chapter begins with an exhortation from the King’s mother on what it means to be a good leader. It is followed by this wonderful description of the character of a good woman. While this passage is about a specific woman, the qualities hold true for all women, they are industrious, thoughtful, dignified, strong, resilient, wise, thrifty, caring, and respect God. These women never seek praise for themselves, what is done is out of pure love. In the spirit of the final verse, let’s give these women honor, they have earned it!
God, we give you thanks on this special day to honor women. Those who have given us life. Those who have nurtured us. Those who have instructed us. Those who have loved us. We give you thanks for the gift of these women in our lives. Through their examples, we see your goodness reflected in our everyday lives. Amen.
