Hosanna!

So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord— the King of Israel!” John 12:13 (NRSV)

How excited the crowd was that day. The long-ago prophesied king was entering their city. It has finally happened after centuries of waiting; he is here! Can you imagine the energy and enthusiasm running through the crowd? Not comprehending the meaning behind Jesus' arrival, but thrilled he is here. The group responds by waving branches ecstatically and crying out in adoration, "Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord— the King of Israel!”

That day there was a lot they did not understand about this man named Jesus. As events would unfold later in the week, we would see attitudes change from praise to scorn. But we can take a lesson from them in their worship on the day of Jesus’ triumphant entry.

Today we possess complete knowledge of who Jesus is and the price he paid for us. We know him as the King of all nations sent by God. Sent not as an earthly king, but as our heavenly intercessor, he has arrived into the Jerusalem of our hearts. As we worship him today, let us welcome him with joy and gladness, waving our palm branches exclaiming with enthusiasm, Hosanna! Hosanna! Hosanna!

Gracious God, thank you for coming to us through your divinely human Son Jesus. We raise our hearts and voices to you in praise. Fill our hearts with your Spirit so that we may be your people. Please help us in all we do to glorify you. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
