Rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross! Philippians 2:7-8 NIV
Whenever I read this verse, I am awed and humbled at the thought that God came from heaven in the form of one of his creations. Not as some full-grown person with position and power, but as a helpless babe in lowly surroundings. He experienced love, joy, sadness, anger, hunger, temptation, all the things we share. He was like us.
At the same time, he was without sin, pure and divine. He was always the servant, giving himself freely to others through his teaching and miracles. Then, in obedience to the Father, he again becomes the servant, to die for our sin. The sinless, pure Lamb of God offered in atonement for the sinful. Why would God do this? Simply from love and the desire to reconcile us to him so that we may understand what is good and have the strength to repel evil.
Father God, thank you for coming to dwell among us and offering us restoration. Help us be your servants in the world and spread the message of your love. We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
