I Am, I Will

Do not fear, for I am with you, do not be afraid, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my victorious right hand. Isaiah 41:10 NRSV

Recently, we did a simple transaction at the bank. Not surprisingly, this was accompanied by five pages of legalese to read and sign. The next day, I wanted to install a new app on my phone. Guess what? That, too, had a scrolling page on usage, privacy, and responsibilities. I couldn't use the app unless I agreed and checked on the "Accept" box. Our modern world is filled with these contractual obligations.

When we accept Christ, we also enter into an agreement. This covenant is not one of the pages of antiquated and confusing legal jargon but a straightforward acceptance with our hearts. We agree to relinquish our will to God, shifting our desire from the sensual to the eternal.

God promises the following:

I am with you.

I am your God.

I will strengthen you.

I will help you.

I will uphold you.

The agreement we have made, God will help us to keep. He is with us in the Holy Spirit to strengthen us when we are tempted, help us in our trials, and guarantee our success. God does this not because we are worthy but because he loves us. He is our God, and we are his people.

Gracious Father, thank you for the covenant offered in Jesus Christ. You offer us freedom from sin through Jesus' suffering, death, and resurrection. By the Holy Spirit, you help us deny carnal desires and live righteous lives. When we falter and stumble, the Spirit is there to lift us. When we feel like giving up, you ensure victory. We thank you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, for you are our God. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
