“Is” and “Not”

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
—1 Corinthians 13:4 (NIV)
A few days ago, I reflected on the word “if”—a conditional invitation to possibility. Today, we turn to two other small but powerful words: “is” and “not.” In 1 Corinthians 13:4, Paul offers a mirror for love—not just romantic love, but agape love, the kind that reflects God’s heart. These words don’t just describe love; they define its boundaries. They tell us what love is, and what it’s not. And in doing so, they invite us to examine our own hearts.
Love Is:
Patient: Love waits. It doesn’t rush to judgment or demand instant results. It endures the silence, the uncertainty, the unanswered prayers. Love trusts that grace is unfolding—even when we can’t see it.
Kind: Love responds with gentleness, even when met with harshness. Kindness isn’t weakness; it’s strength wrapped in compassion. It chooses mercy over retaliation, tenderness over triumph.
But love is also defined by what it resists, what it refuses to become.
Love Is Not:
Envious: Love celebrates others. It doesn’t compare or compete. It rejoices in someone else’s blessing without feeling diminished. Love says, “I’m glad for you,” and means it.
Boastful: Love doesn’t need a spotlight. It doesn’t parade its goodness or seek applause. In a world of humblebrags and curated perfection, love simply shows up and serves.
Proud: Love kneels. It doesn’t elevate self or demand recognition. It flows from humility, not ego. If love is used to prop up our image, it’s not love—it’s performance.
When we hold the mirror of Christ’s love before us, what do we see? Where do we fall short? And where is grace still at work, shaping us into love’s likeness? We are not yet perfect—but we are being perfected. Love is both our calling and our becoming.
God of patient kindness,
Thank you for the love revealed in Jesus—steadfast, humble, and true.
Forgive us when we envy, boast, or let pride take root.
Teach us to wait with grace, to respond with gentleness,
To rejoice in others, and to walk humbly with you.
May your love be visible in us—not just in words, but in witness.
In all we do, may we glorify you.
Amen.
Peace & Grace,
Pastor Tim
