Joy in Forgiveness

“You forgave the iniquity of your people and covered all their sins.” — Psalm 85:2 (NIV)

In many churches that follow the Advent tradition, this week we light the third candle, the pink candle of joy. Perhaps the greatest expression of that joy is in knowing that God forgives. If you have ever carried the heavy weight of sin and felt it being lifted after seeking repentance, you have experienced this sense of joy.

From the very beginning, when humanity turned from God’s righteousness in Genesis 3, God did not abandon us. Even before animal sacrifice was established, God clothed Adam and Eve, covering their shame. God, in his grace, has no desire to leave us in an unhappy state of iniquity but wants us to experience the fullness of joy. Throughout history, God’s forgiveness was shown in many ways: Noah and his family were saved from destruction, Israel was delivered from Egypt, and David was restored after his repentance.

Sacrifices became a sign pointing forward, but they were never the final answer. The fullness of forgiveness came in Jesus Christ, whose blood was shed once for all. As John’s Gospel reminds us: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” (John 3:16–17)

This forgiveness is not only something we receive; it is something we are invited to share. When we forgive others, we mirror God’s grace. And just as repentance lifts the weight of sin, forgiveness lifts the burden of resentment. Joy is found both in being forgiven and in forgiving.

So in this Advent season, as we light the candle of joy, let us rejoice that God has covered our sins, and let us extend that joy by forgiving others, living as people set free.

Gracious God, we thank you for the joy of forgiveness. From the garden to the cross, you have shown mercy and grace. Help us rejoice in the freedom you give and share that joy by forgiving others. May our lives reflect your love, and may we walk in the light of Christ, who came not to condemn but to save. Amen.

Peace & Grace,

Pastor Tim
