For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the Kingdom of the Son he loves. Colossians 1:13 NIV
The word Kingdom for some folks invokes thoughts of "haves" -- royalty and peerages -- and "have nots." But, of course, there are more peons and serfs -- common folk than the others. It may also conjure images of abuse and oppression. Those on the bottom always suffer from the actions of the elite. You only need to watch Game of Thrones or, better yet, read the Old Testament books of Chronicles and Kings to know this is true. The commoners suffer.
When Jesus Christ came, he turned the authoritarian idea of the Kingdom into one of kinship -- a Kin-dom. His rule, instead, is one of equality and true freedom for the meek and lowly. While he did spend time among the Scribes and Pharisees in the Temple, Christ's ministry and miracles were mainly to those in need. The tax collectors, prostitutes, and the sick and alienated. Those disrespected and disregarded by the rulers, folks like you and me.
God's Kin-dom here on earth can be a place without hunger, homelessness, and addiction. It can be one of love and peace for all. But it is upon us who are kin of Jesus to trust and to make it happen. And we look forward to that day when this Kin-dom obliterates death, sickness, and suffering, and as adopted children of God, we become united with our brother Jesus Christ in this perfect rule.
God of perfect rule, we thank you for Jesus, who brought us the light. Through him, we have the perfect example of how things can and will be, not the rule of an elite but one based on kinship. As your children, help us show your love to others, taking the actions of Christ and promoting your heavenly Kin-dom. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
