Leading and Learning

“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young. Instead, set an example for the believers through your speech, behavior, love, faith, and by being sexually pure.” — 1 Timothy 4:12 (CEB)

When I was in high school, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. As graduation approached and people asked about my plans, all I could say was, “Go to college,” but beyond that, I was lost. My grandfather, who was pretty business savvy, told me, “Go into computers.” This was the early, rapidly evolving 80s, and he didn’t really know what that meant—he just sensed it would matter in the future. It was the equivalent of someone being told today, “Go into AI.” All this is to say: I was given good advice by an elder, and I benefited from his wisdom.

Paul offers Timothy the same kind of guidance. Timothy is young, stepping into leadership in a community that might not take him seriously. Paul doesn’t tell him to assert himself or prove his worth. Instead, he invites Timothy to let his life speak—to set an example in speech, behavior, love, faith, and purity. Paul knows that credibility in the Christian life isn’t earned through age or status but through the shape of one’s character.

There’s a mutual calling here. Elders are entrusted with the responsibility of offering sound spiritual guidance—wisdom shaped by years of walking with God. Younger believers are entrusted with the responsibility of living out their faith visibly and courageously, showing the community what love and integrity look like in real time. Paul honors both roles, and the church is strengthened when each embraces their part.

So today, if you’ve walked a few more miles, consider the gift your encouragement can be. Your steady presence, your stories, your prayers—they matter. And if you’re younger or simply newer in faith, don’t underestimate the witness of your life. You can lead right now through kindness, integrity, and a willingness to grow. God uses all of us, across generations, to build up the body of Christ.

God, thank you for those who guide with wisdom and grace. Strengthen them as they mentor and encourage. And thank you for the young and the newly growing in faith. Give them courage to lead by example in speech, behavior, love, faith, and purity. Knit us together across generations so that your church reflects your love in every season of life. Amen.

Peace & Grace,

Pastor Tim
