No Substitutes

Therefore you are great, O Lord God; for there is no one like you, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

2 Samuel 7:22

Today's verse is King David's prayerful response upon receiving the news from Nathan that God established a covenant with him and his offspring. Like all of humanity, he made sinful mistakes, but his love and devotion to God never faltered. We see this deeply held belief expressed by David throughout his story; there is one God -- no substitutes.

The fulfillment of God’s promise to David came to us as a new covenant in the form of Jesus Christ. This new agreement offers redemption—a chance to heal the rift created by sin and renew our fellowship with God.

In the thousands of years since Dave spoke this prayer, nothing has changed; there is still only one true God. Though we are faced daily with sinful things wanting to become substitutes, they cannot. They may offer pleasure and fill some temporary void but can not provide anything of lasting value. There is only one God, no substitutes allowed.

Our Lord and one true God, we give you thanks for covenants. For the covenant with David that brought us, Jesus Christ. For the offer of healing our brokenness that is only found in your grace. Though tempted by other gods, we know there can be no substitutes. There is no one like you. Please help us today to demonstrate what it means to be redeemed. Let others look beyond this world’s discord and violence to see the beauty and peace offered in you. We ask this in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen

Blessings!

Pastor Tim
