On the Edge of Change

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. – Joshua 1:9 (NIV)
As a younger man, I couldn’t understand the older generations' resistance to change; as I grew older, though, I began to see my elders' viewpoint. Change means leaving behind all we’re comfortable with to travel the path of the unknown. It can be scary, but necessary.
In today’s verse, Israel stood where many of us have stood — right on the edge of change, unsure of what comes next. A new generation was preparing to enter the land, and Joshua, faithful and battle-tested, was stepping into a role he had never carried before.
God didn’t just tell Joshua to be courageous; He gave him the means to live it. In verse 8, God calls Joshua to keep the Book of the Law close — to speak it, meditate on it, let it guide every decision. Courage wasn’t something Joshua had to manufacture; it flowed from staying close to God’s voice.
The same instruction God gave Joshua long ago still speaks to us when we stand on the edge of change. When the future feels uncertain, we can take the same steps Joshua was given.
First, pray and seek God’s guidance. You may not hear an audible voice, but the gentle prompting of the Holy Spirit still leads God’s people.
Second, turn to Scripture. Again and again we see how God has guided His people through unfamiliar territory — and those stories steady our hearts. Recall, too, the ways God has helped you in past seasons of change. Talk with trusted friends about how they’ve seen God at work.
And finally, do not fear. When we pray, meditate on God’s word, and trust the Spirit’s quiet direction — even in moments of doubt — we discover the same promise Joshua received: God goes with us wherever we go.
Gracious God, in every season of change, draw us close to Your voice. Let Your Word guide us, Your Spirit lead us, and Your presence give us courage. Walk with us into whatever comes next. Amen.
Grace & Peace,
Pastor Tim
