One Body

“And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.” Colossians 3:15 ESV

Have you ever worked on a team or in an organization where you all have the same goal but differing opinions on reaching an objective? One of our many human flaws is that we can be opinionated and let our egos interfere with choosing what might be a better alternative. We have a subconscious desire to influence and control the outcome in what is obviously the best way -- after all, it is our idea!

Today’s scripture provides an alternative that is not only the best way but the only way for success, God’s way. The hard part is for us headstrong humans to humble ourselves and accept Christ’s peace into our hearts. Being Christians does not exclude us from this struggle; we still find it difficult to relinquish our need for control. However, once we realize that we are not the body, but a piece of Christ’s body, we can accomplish great things not for ourselves but for the glory of his kingdom.

The final sentence was not an after-thought of the author, but a poignant statement, “And be thankful.” We are to be thankful not only for the peace of Christ that rules in our hearts. But also grateful that we are part of one body. In Christ Jesus, together, we are much stronger than the individual body parts. In him, there is not only peace but order and cohesiveness.

Our most compassionate and loving Savior, you are the maker and fulfiller of all plans. We give you thanks for the gift of the Holy Spirit to lead and guide us. We come to you today in the knowledge that we often let our ambitions and egos get in the way of your plans. God, we ask for your help in accepting your peace in our hearts. Help us humble ourselves, and remember that we are mere parts of the body and that only you are the whole and holy body. In the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.

Blessings!

Pastor Tim
