Open Hands and Open Heart

"Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." 2 Corinthians 9:7 (NIV)

Giving has always been an essential part of faith. In the United Methodist Church, we traditionally set aside one Sunday a year—Stewardship Sunday—to reflect on generosity and commitment. Depending on the denomination, this practice may vary in name and frequency, but its focus remains the same: to encourage believers to support the mission and ministry of the church. But scripture reveals that true generosity extends far beyond money—it is a reflection of the heart and an act of trust in God.

Jesus teaches in Matthew 6:1-4 that our offerings should be done in secret, not for public approval but as a quiet act of faith. Deuteronomy 15:7-10 reminds us to be open-handed, giving freely without hesitation or regret. Yet, giving isn’t just about finances—it’s about a lifestyle of generosity, where we offer our time, talents, kindness, and resources with joy.

Remember the Good Samaritan in Luke 10:30-37—he didn’t just give money, he gave his time, his care, and his effort. Or consider Acts 3:6, where Peter and John had no silver or gold, but they offered healing instead. Giving isn’t just about what we have—it’s about how willing we are to share.

But if we’re honest, giving can be difficult. We may hold back out of fear of scarcity, fear of losing control, fear that our generosity won’t make a difference. Yet, God calls us to release that fear and trust Him completely. When we give with open hands, we step into His abundant grace, knowing that He is our provider. Giving isn’t about loss—it’s about faith in His provision.

In a world that teaches us to cling tightly to what we own, God invites us to do the opposite: to surrender, to trust, and to give joyfully. And in that trust, we find the true blessing of generosity—not just in what we offer, but in the faith it builds within us.

Lord, help me to trust You fully. Teach me to live generously—not only with my resources but with my time, my talents, and my love. Remove any fear of scarcity and replace it with joy in giving. May my generosity reflect my faith in You and bring glory to Your name. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
