Ordinary Things

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31 NRSV

When we meet people for the first time, we often are asked what we do as an occupation. It only gives us a little information about the person, but it's a starting point for a conversation. A better question is, what do you like to do? This query gives us a better insight into what the person enjoys, but it still fails to divulge the person's content. Those intimate details are found in the ordinariness of daily life, and these are the things we are remembered for.

Each waking moment of every day is an opportunity to glorify God. Whether in our private spiritual time with our prayers of thanksgiving or standing in line to get our morning coffee.

To exhibit God's glory isn't just about witnessing and passing out tracts, not that there's anything wrong with that, but about seizing the opportunity to show empathy and kindness in our daily interactions with others. To let the inner light of Christ's transformation in us be reflected in whatever we do.

There's nothing wrong with grander actions to serve God through volunteerism, building homes, serving the homeless, and mission trips. We absolutely need more folks to do those things. However, not everyone can, and even for those who do, their daily walk must be consistent with their everyday activities. Our lives should reflect God's glory in all things at all times.

God of Glory, we thank you for the mighty things you've done in our lives. You have brought us from sin and darkness into light and hope. May we use the ordinariness of our daily lives to reflect your glory so that others recognize your difference in us. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
