"The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him." Nahum 1:7 ESV
In Nahum, the author relates a vision of the outpouring of God's anger against the Assyrian city of Nineveh. The Assyrians were aggressive and fierce conquers who served as a constant threat against Judah. Amidst this message of God's wrath, is this message of peace and comfort for Israel (v. 6-8).
"Who can stand before his indignation? Who can endure the heat of his anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken into pieces by him. The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him. But with an overflowing flood he will make a complete end of the adversaries, and will pursue his enemies into darkness."
What can we take from this? Amidst the pandemic, economic uncertainty, and racial injustice of the world, there is only one person to whom we can turn for escape. God, in His grace, provides a refuge. He recognizes those who seek shelter in him. While the storm rages in the world around us, we can find peace in his stronghold.
God, we give you thanks for your refuge. When the world is crazy around us, we can find shelter in you. Please help us today to share this promise with others. In Christ's name, we pray. Amen.
Blessings!
Pastor Tim
