Pairings
Pursue peace with everyone, and the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. Hebrews 12:14 NRSV
Imagine we are playing a game where I say a word, and you reply with the first word that comes to mind. For example, if I say Adam, bacon, and pots, you would likely reply Eve, eggs, and pans. In our minds, these things are paired together.
Paul links two words we may not instinctively think of as belonging together, peace and holiness. There are two things we can take away from this scripture. First, to live righteously, we must have the desire for peace. As people who continually experience God’s peace, we must seek the same relationship with everyone. Secondly, peace cannot come at a sacrifice to holiness. If we go along to get along, but what it means agreeing to something sinful, it’s wrong.
Heavenly Father, by the Holy Spirit, guide us in peace and holiness. Grant us the courage and strength to stand against sin at all times while still seeking peace with all. We pray this in the name of your Holy Son and our Savior and Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
