"My child, listen and be wise: Keep your heart on the right course." Proverbs 23:19 NLT
Regardless of our age, but perhaps more so in our youth, we listen to and are influenced by others. Of course, not all council is equal; some are better than others. Wisdom comes with discerning which is which. Two general rules I have learned the hard way. First, if your inner voice tells you something is stupid or dangerous, listen. Also, if something sounds too good to be true, it is.
Today's verse warns, "Do not carouse with drunkards or feast with gluttons, for they are on their way to poverty, and too much sleep clothes them in rags." (v. 20-22) Overindulging in food and drink may not be your thing, but what it is isn't the point–whatever separates us from God, beware. When we ignore wise teaching, our experiences, and especially the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we are in for a world of hurt.
Holy and loving Father, open our ears to listen to wise voices and discernment to make the right choices. We pray this in the name of your son Jesus Christ. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
