Sarah Laughed

Writer's picture: timothyrsoutherntimothyrsouthern

So she laughed silently to herself and said, “How could a worn-out woman like me enjoy such pleasure, especially when my master—my husband—is also so old?” Genesis 18:12 NLT

We are familiar with the story; though advanced in years, Abraham and Sarah are promised a son. Now, you can't really blame Sarah for being skeptical. She had been barren throughout her childbearing years, and now, she and her even older husband are to be given something that seemed impossible. Little did she know that the strangers they entertained that day were agents of the God of the impossible. In God's time, she would bear Isaac, her only child, the beginning of the promised nation.

We may not have angels making personal appearances, but we have God himself in the Holy Spirit that speaks to us. Do we, like Sarah, sometimes find what the Spirit asks laughable? We think ourselves unqualified for whatever reason. "God can't possibly be asking me to do (whatever it is), I'm to, or not (fill in the blank.)."

However, the Holy Spirit is leading you today; no matter how laughable it may seem, I encourage you to step out in faith. You can do this with the confidence that God goes before, behind, over, under, and within us. With God, those things we formally thought impossible become realizable, and like Sarah, we experience that there is nothing too hard for the Lord!

God of the impossible, help us overcome our skepticism to realize your new blessing. May we answer your calling with obedient and willing hearts. Embolden us with the courage to step out in faith, setting aside all doubts and fears. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
