Saying No to Temptation

“No testing has overtaken you that is not common to everyone. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tested beyond your strength, but with the testing he will also provide the way out so that you may be able to endure it.” – 1 Corinthians 10:13 (NRSVUE)

It’s a common feeling to believe our temptations are unique. After all, we are individuals — each with our own personal journeys, our own histories, and our own particular weaknesses. So, when we hear Paul say that no testing or temptation is “unique,” it can be easy to think, "But my struggles feel very particular."

And in one sense, that’s true. Each of us is drawn or pressured by different things. What tempts me may not tempt you. What unsettles you may not unsettle someone else.

But beneath the surface differences, the root of temptation is remarkably consistent. The details change from person to person and generation to generation, yet the underlying pull away from trusting God remains the same. Temptation always tries to convince us that God will not be enough — that we must reach, grasp, or control in order to secure ourselves. 

You can hear that pattern in the way temptation speaks:

Greed says, “God won’t give me enough — I need to take more.”

Lust says, “God won’t satisfy me — I need to seek pleasure elsewhere.”

Pride says, “God won’t lift me up — I need to elevate myself.”

Fear says, “God won’t protect me — I need to control everything.”

Different temptations, same root: a question about God’s faithfulness.

Which is why Paul’s reassurance matters so deeply. He doesn’t say, “Be strong enough.” He says, “God is faithful.” The way out of temptation is not found in our resolve but in God’s reliability. The endurance we need is not self-generated; it is provided.

Temptation tries to convince us that God will not be enough. Paul reminds us that God always is.

Holy and gracious God, we confess that we are often pulled away from trusting you. We listen to the whispers of our fears, our desires, and our pride, and we forget that you are faithful. Forgive us for the times we have reached for what cannot satisfy, for the moments we have tried to secure ourselves instead of resting in your strength and your love. When temptation comes, remind us of your presence; steady our hearts and turn our eyes toward your faithfulness. Give us the courage to rely on you and the grace to walk in your way. Only by your Spirit can we endure, only by your mercy can we stand, and only through your faithfulness can we find the way out and the way forward. We pray in the name of Jesus, our refuge and our strength. Amen.
