Seeing the Path Ahead

“Humility is the fear of the Lord; its wages are riches and honor and life.” — Proverbs 22:4 (NIV)
If you’ve read the Bible for a while, you have realized the benefits of reading around the verse. Sometimes it means reading the immediate surrounding verse; at other times it might be a whole chapter (especially in the Epistles). This reading provides additional context and insight into what the author may be trying to tell us.
Today’s verse is a good example; it stands beautifully on its own, but the verses around it deepen its meaning.
Just before it, we’re told that “the prudent see danger and take refuge” (v. 3) — a reminder that wisdom includes awareness and discernment. And just after it, we hear that “thorns and snares lie on the path of the perverse” (v. 5), which acknowledges the real hazards that can trip us up.
Taken together, these verses paint a fuller picture. Humility grounds us. Wisdom guides us. Attentiveness helps us navigate a world where not every path is smooth.
Most of us know what it feels like to rush ahead without pausing to pray, to listen, or to consider the consequences. We “keep going and pay the penalty” more often than we’d like to admit. But Scripture reminds us that God doesn’t ask us to walk unthinkingly. Wisdom is a gift offered to anyone willing to slow down long enough to receive it.
Today’s verse invites us into that slower, steadier way — a way shaped by humility, centered in God, and alert to the terrain beneath our feet. It’s not about fearfulness; it’s about walking with the kind of awareness that keeps us from stumbling into thorns we never needed to encounter.
God, grant me the humility to learn, the clarity to see what lies ahead, and the courage to choose the wiser path. Shape my steps so that I walk with attentiveness and trust, finding refuge in you before trouble finds me. Amen.
Grace & Peace,
Pastor Tim
