Still Enough

“Be still, and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations; I am exalted in the earth.” – Psalms 46:10 (NRSVUE)
As I was sorting through my T-shirts earlier in the week, I found one that reads “Be still” in bold letters, with “know that he is God” in smaller words underneath. It’s one I haven’t worn in a while, but it was obviously a message I needed to hear, because that scripture has been on my mind since.
Today, as I pulled on that same shirt to prepare for the day, I was again reminded of how often God sends us messages we can carry with us. The command to “Be still” is something I suspect we all need to hear and heed. I find myself so often—from the time my feet hit the floor in the morning until bedtime—working through endless task lists, with plenty of things still left for the next several days.
In the storm of activity, it is so easy not to be still. But in the stillness is where it becomes easiest to hear the voice of God and the reminder that he is to be exalted over nations, over the earth, over my business, over my hurry. Wearing that shirt today feels like a small act of obedience, a way of choosing to remember that God is already God—and I don’t have to try to be.
Holy God, quiet my restless heart today. In the moments when I rush past Your presence, draw me gently back. Help me welcome the pauses You offer, the invitations to breathe, to listen, to trust. Let the truth of who You are settle me and steady me. Be exalted in my thoughts, my choices, and my steps, that my life may reflect Your peace and Your glory. Amen.
Grace & Peace,
Pastor Tim
