Stolid Endurance

"You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near." — James 5:8 (NIV)
Long before I had the privilege of visiting the Lincoln Memorial, I had seen pictures and miniature statues of the stolid Abraham Lincoln. His tall, seated figure—calm yet resolute—seemed to embody patience and strength. Lincoln’s appearance, with his furrowed brow and steady gaze, conveyed a resolve that endured the storms of the Civil War and national division.
It was that image that came to mind when I read James’ exhortation: “You too, be patient and stand firm.” Just as Lincoln’s presence reminds us of steadfast leadership in troubled times, James calls believers to a deeper resolve—not rooted in human strength, but in the hope of Christ’s return. To stand firm is not to be rigid, but to be anchored. To be patient is not to be passive, but to wait with expectation.
Lincoln’s memorial is carved from Georgia marble, but James reminds us that our endurance is carved in faith. The Lord’s coming is near, and so we are invited to live with a posture of quiet strength, trusting that God’s purposes will prevail.
Faithful God, in a world that shifts and sways, teach us the strength of stolid endurance. Anchor us in patience, steady us in hope, and remind us that your coming is near. May our lives reflect your quiet resolve and your eternal promise. Amen.
Peace & Grace,
Pastor Tim
