Taste & See

Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him. Psalms 34:8 NIV

Have you ever eaten something for the first time and realized it was probably the most delicious thing you’ve ever tasted? For years afterward, the memory of that tantalizing sensation lingers with you. For me, it was a white asparagus soup that I had at a restaurant in Bern, Switzerland, during one of my work trips. I still remember the aroma and taste of that wonderfully sweet, creamy soup I had 20 years ago. Regrettably, I have not seen it on a menu anywhere since.

In my Bible, the note for this psalm says, “Of David, when he feigned madness before Abimelech so that he drove him out, and he went away.” In his exuberance and relief at his deliverance, David thanks the Lord. When we recall the number of times God has come to our aid, we can easily echo those sentiments: “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” When we seek Him, he is there in our darkest hours as a refuge. In those times, when we feel distant from God, our souls crave to return to his goodness. He fills our spiritual appetites and leaves us desiring more. Unlike my white asparagus soup experienced in a place far away, God is always near and accessible at any time.

God, we thank you for always being there for us. We can find comfort and peace in your refuge. You satisfy in our souls a hunger that cannot be filled by anything else. When we are absent from your presence, we long for you. God, help us when we feel disconnected and far from you so we may remember your peace and turn to you. We pray this in the name of your son Jesus. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
