Telephone

And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation." Mark 16:15 NRSV

You may remember the party game “telephone” we played as kids. A person begins by whispering a word or phrase to someone else. They, in turn, pass along the same word or phrase until it comes to the final person who speaks aloud what they heard. If what is said matches what was given at the beginning, it means a well-played game; all the players are paying attention.

Jesus states that we, his disciples, are to pass along His good news to others. His message of redemption must be declared clearly, and nothing must be altered. Here is what we are to share: "The one who believes and is baptized will be saved; but the one who does not believe will be condemned." (v. 16)

In telephone, the game is short-lived; it lasts only as long as the number of people. Jesus' message though has no boundaries; it is to be shared with all creation from generation to generation. If we stop or change the content of the message, we fail in the commission Jesus gave us. If the person hears and rejects the news, it is one thing, but if they've never heard, we are depriving them of the opportunity to know Jesus.

God, we give you thanks for Jesus' life-saving message. Please give us the courage to pass this unadulterated good news to others so that it, in turn, may be passed to all creation. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
